What Your Fertility Blood Tests Are Really Telling You
Confused by your fertility blood test results? Here’s what hormones like FSH, LH, AMH, and progesterone really mean.
If you’ve ever looked at your blood test results and felt completely lost — you’re not alone. Between all the abbreviations and “normal ranges,” it can be hard to know what’s actually going on with your hormones.
As a Naturopath focusing on women’s health and fertility, I help women interpret these results — not just whether you “fit” within a lab range, but what your body is trying to communicate.
The Key Hormones Behind Fertility
FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): At the start of your cycle, FSH helps your ovaries grow and mature an egg.
Estrogen: As the egg grows, it produces estrogen, which thickens your uterine lining and signals your brain that ovulation is approaching.
LH (Luteinizing Hormone): When estrogen peaks, it triggers a surge of LH — this is what causes ovulation (the release of the egg).
Progesterone: After ovulation, progesterone takes over, helping the uterine lining stay thick and ready for a potential pregnancy.
Thyroid and Insulin: These hormones influence metabolism, egg quality, and ovulation.
Prolactin and Cortisol: High stress or elevated prolactin can interfere with ovulation — showing how closely stress and hormones are linked.
Interpreting Results
Blood test results are just one piece of the puzzle. I also consider:
Cycle day testing (timing matters!)
Your symptoms — energy, sleep, PMS, cycle length
Stress levels and gut function (both affect hormone balance)
Vaginal microbiome - checking for imbalances
